Our Commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kansas City is committed to providing a culturally and psychologically safe environment for everyone associated with our charity: guest families, visitors, volunteers, staff, donors, vendors and partners.

We are determined that kindness and inclusion will permeate every interaction so that all will experience a true sense of belonging here.  Together, we continually and intentionally create and maintain a community where ALL people are affirmed, respected and valued.

We appreciate the complexity of our shared and individual humanity. We acknowledge our mutual responsibilities to each other as people of diverse race, ethnicity, language, sexual orientation, gender expression or identity, religious beliefs, health, abilities, political affiliation, immigration/citizenship status, and lived experience.

As an organization, RMHC-KC is actively listening to the diverse voices in our community and taking action to ensure that we are living up to our commitments.  We will keep listening, learning and working.  We know that there is much more work to be done and that the journey is ongoing.

Celebrate Persian New Year

These care kits were created to celebrate Nowruz, the Persian New Year which occurs annually on the spring equinox. Below are the items included in the basket and their significance.

  • Takdis: Persian sweet & sour candy
  • Eidy (New Year Spending Money – $10 Amazon gift card): Money to spend toward something new
  • Sekke (Coins – bag of milk chocolate coins): One of the items that each family sets out on their table to symbolize their hopes and wishes for the new year. They also represent the hope for prosperity.
  • Sabzeh (Green Plant): One of the items that each family sets out on their table to symbolize the hope of growth and new beginnings.

No-Rooz Pirouz!

A volunteer who celebrates the Persian New Year guided us in setting up a Haft Seen Table. This table includes at least seven items that start with the letter ‘s’ in Farsi and each symbolizes different hopes for the new year.

Our families enjoyed participating in this meaningful holiday celebration.

Celebrate Chinese New Year

These craft kits were made in honor of the Lantern Festival, which traditionally marks the end of the Chinese New Year. It is celebrated on the 15th day of the first Chinese lunar month, Along with these kits, a traditional Chinese New Year meal from Bo Ling’s was also provided. Below are some details about this celebration.

  • DIY Chinese Lantern craft kits, with step-by-step instructions and all the supplies needed (red paper, yellow ribbon, tape and scissors)
  • Information sheet including important Chinese New Year facts and traditional dishes served for dinner by Bo Ling’s

Celebrate Dia de los Reyes

These kits for families were created to celebrate Dia de los Reyes, Three Kings Day or Epiphany, which occurs annually on January 6. The volunteer group also brought La Rosca de Reyes, a traditional sweet bread to share with the families staying at RMHC-KC. Below are the items included in the goodie bags.

Celebrate Eid al-Fitr

Celebrating Eid al-Fitr with one of our guest families who observed this special occasion was truly meaningful. This holiday, which marks the conclusion of Ramadan, the sacred month of fasting in Islam, holds deep significance.

To honor their traditions, we arranged delicious halal meals from Haha’s Kebabs and Shawarma, a local restaurant known for its authentic offerings.

Celebrate La Posada

Our amazing friends from Mulher Magazine and the Kansas City Hispanic Community organize an annual Posada celebration for the families at RMHC-KC. In previous years, we’ve had Mariachi Estrella KC perform, along with a pinata for the kids and a delicious tamale dinner.

It is so special for us to honor and celebrate this Hispanic Christmas tradition, especially while we have many Hispanic families staying with us at the Ronald McDonald House.

Celebrate Hanukkah

In honor of Hanukkah, one of our Jewish staff members hosted an activity night for the families. The event included Hanukkah themed cookie decorating, dreidel games, crafts and challah bread from Bloom Baking Co. as a special treat!
